The building of a monster

The past days me and the other gals of Voor de Kunstenaar had one last project to carry out: building a monster.

Our children’s workshop was a big hit at the ‘LEFestival‘ and we had great fun  (translation LEFestival: ‘festival with guts’).

The ‘Zaanbeest’ (Zaanbeast):

“It is born, it sets off, interacts, and grows in the course of the LEFestival. Seven artists in training at ‘Voor de Kunstenaar’ are building the Zaanbeest from recycled material, with each other and the visitors of the the festival. A new Zaanish myth will arise.

You can get acquainted with the parents of the beast. On the back of the sea container where the Zaanbeest lives you will find collages in which the parents of the beast are presented with biographies, portraits and photographs of their artwork.

The artists will be building limbs together with the visitors, from which the beast can be created. Again and again different beasts may arise. Possibly, the beast could even move out of his home, the container, to go traveling (just like the artists have been on their own journey during their training days).

With the Zaanbeest the seven artists of Voor de Kunstenaar make a connection between the concepts of the sea container and the water in the Zaan area. In this way they will conclude their training, in a manner that differs fro the ordinary, shows guts and characterizes Voor de Kunstenaar.”

Watch out for the Zaan beast!

Early day tomorrow:

Building a seamonster at a festival in an area of the Netherlands that is below sealevel! (like actually half of the Netherlands is – for the scientists amongst you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flood_control_in_the_Netherlands)

Recovering

Sorry I have been so quiet last week, but I was busy with my first exhibition featuring my illustrations!

It was great having so much wonderful feedback on my work (and selling my new stuff!). Going to catch some sleep now, will try to keep this smile on my face for some days to come.
